Preparing for Fumigation

Fumigation Preparation

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE HOME OWNER, OCCUPANT, OR HOME OWNER’S AGENT, HAVE TO HAVE ALL ITEMS ON THIS CHECKLIST DONE BEFORE THE CREW ARRIVES: FAILURE MAY POSTPONE THE FUMIGATION.

Remove all people from the property to be fumigated; remove vehicles from garage/carport, if included. Fumigation crew must have access to keys for vehicles left in structure.

Remove all interior plants and all potted or hanging plants from the exterior building eaves.

Remove all pets (including fish, birds, dogs, or cats) from the house or yard.  The water in the fish tank does not have to be drained, but turn the air pump off.  Allow 48 hours before returning birds to building and/or consult your local animal expert.

Remove all mattresses and pillows completely enveloped in waterproof (plastic) covers or remove covers.  This includes baby mattresses but not waterbeds.  Open or remove zippered plastic clothes bags.

Food, feed, drugs and medicinals (including those items in refrigerators and freezers and any other items that might be orally ingested, such as candy or gum) not sealed in glass or metal containers must be removed or double bagged with non polymer bags.  These protective bags are available only from your termite inspector.  Seal bags with masking tape only.

UNBAGGED OR IMPROPERLY BAGGED/SEALED FOOD MAY BE REMOVED AND DISPOSED OF OR BAGGED AT AN ADDITIONAL CHARGE.

NOTE:  Vikane is not registered for fumigation of prepared foodstuff.  FOOD MUST BE REMOVED OR BAGGED AS A REQUIREMENT RATHER THAN OUT OF FEAR OF CONTAMINATION.

The occupant should soak the exterior foundation soil with water at least 12 inches from foundation outward.  This can be done the evening before and may help to protect plant root growth.  Cut back plant growth where possible 12 to 18 inches away from exterior of building(s).

The occupant must turn off any air conditioning unit, thermostat operated or otherwise.  If any burglar alarms are to be left on, leave operational instructions with your termite inspector.  Structure exterior lights or sensors on timers must be turned off.

We must have access to all areas within the structure, including rooms or garages kept locked, SO PLEASE MAKE KEY ARRANGEMENTS BEFORE THE DAY OF FUMIGATION.  THIS IS REQUIRED BY LAW..  If walk-in or large safes exist, you must be present to open them for our inspection.

We request that the home owner or occupant remove antennas where possible; If we remove them, we will assume no responsibility for damage or alignment.

To ensure complete gas ventilation, the fumigator must open your drawers and/or cabinetwork and closets.  You may wish to do this before the fumigator’s arrival.

Where gas refrigerators exist, the occupant should allow for defrosting during the fumigation, as all gas will be turned off.

In cases where gas pilots will not remain lit after lighting, or where heater, water heater or oven are old, and special expertise is needed in lighting, we will request that you contact the gas company to come and re-light the pilot.
